Damage
by Wendy Darling
How
can things so long ago
Hurt me even now?
Scars that have healed,
But imprecisely,
And for many of them I wonder,
"What caused this?"
I
cannot think of the precise moment
The cuts were made,
But I know the knives came down,
Lots of blood oozed out,
Sullying me, staining my flesh
My mind.
And only now, years later,
Have I recognized
That blood.
