"When I look in the mirror I see a brittle young man of glass and ice."
Alix Reste's diminishing hopes for the future are suffocating his life
in the austerely religious city of Zoelon. His desperate attempts to
save money working in a bleak and dangerous textile factory have so
far proved utterly futile, barely leaving him enough to survive each
day. While he freezes the nights away in squalor alongside two other
workers, nightmares of the past plague his sleep.
His actions,
swaying violently between compassionate gestures and brutal acts of
self-preservation, lead him slowly towards the beginning of his fate
and the mysterious, sacrilegious Enteri who prowl the streets of
Zoelon. Alix must quickly decide who to trust with his life as the
walls of secrecy crumble around him changing everything.
Sharp and deliciously dark imagery brings the oppressively religious
society of Zoelon flourishing to life. Wonderfully created characters
populate the story including the beautiful and decadent race Enteri
whose androgynous nature remind one very much of Storm Constantine's
Wraeththu.
The uncomfortable sharing of the city between its pious
inhabitants and the blasphemous Enteri creates an atmosphere riddled
with paranoia and fear. With this debut, A Dark God Laughing leaves
Fiona McGavin's readers breathless for more.
